CPD: OPA & TriOS CPD Series: Criminal Law Matters

Overview

The Ontario Paralegal Association, in collaboration with triOS College, presents a live Zoom CPD session designed to provide students and licensees with essential knowledge on criminal law practice.  This session offers a well-rounded perspective on courtroom conduct, best practices, and various aspects of the justice system from the viewpoints of judges, prosecutors, defence counsel, and international legal experts.

Guest Speakers

International Perspective: Aristides Betancur Cuifettelli a leading academic in criminal law and head professor for Colombian public defenders, shares a comparative view of criminal justice from a civil law jurisdiction.

Judicial Perspective: Hon.  Justice Roger Salhany, Q.C. (retired Superior Court of Ontario) provides insights from the bench, drawing on his extensive judicial experience and contributions to legal education.

Crown’s Perspective: Patricia (JUS) Moore, Crown Attorney for the Region of Waterloo, discusses prosecutorial strategies and key considerations for presenting cases.

Defence Counsel’s Perspective: Ted Claxton, LL.B., Program Coordinator at triOS College, offers guidance on courtroom advocacy, negotiation with the Crown, and effective defence strategies.
